For universal college preparedness to be a top priority in high school, education leaders must create a school that is a stepping-stone to college. Central to this idea is promoting the expectation that all students will complete high school prepared to attend college. Such expectations are the basis for an education system in which students are more successful.

Surrounding these expectations are the four cornerstones that make achieving them possible using data, academic rigor and support, social support, and P-16 alignment. The cornerstones support one another. A P-16 continuum and using data to create quality evaluations lead to stronger social supports and academic rigor and supports. A continuum in which schools, districts, teachers, and communities work to provide aligned coursework and developmentally appropriate college preparation is itself a form of social support. Building a strong P-16 continuum also creates an environment in which academic rigor is increased and academic supports must be provided, by virtue of ensuring that all students can complete college-level work. Similarly, developing quality evaluations enables schools and teachers to assess the success of the existing supports and level of academic rigor, as well as to make necessary adjustments or, in some cases, more radical changes.

How do I create the college readiness framework in my own school?
The following are ways that principals can engage their communities, in collaboration with college outreach programs, parents, and other community partners, to increase college readiness for all students.

The most important step in the process is to become familiar with the college readiness framework so that it can support all subsequent work.
