What Works for Students in Outreach Programs

Relationship to framework

The most effective programs nurture strong, lasting relationships between students and informed adult mentors. Effective programs also provide students with rigorous academic preparation for college through supplementary workshops, courses, and tutoring; modifications to existing curricula in response to students’ learning needs; and assistance with accessing advanced courses at their high schools. In addition, they offer services to students over a long-term period, develop peer groups that support students’ goals and socio-emotional health, supply financial assistance such as free test preparation courses and scholarships for college, and demonstrate appreciation of students’ cultures by offering culturally relevant programming and hiring staff with similar backgrounds.

Purpose

To provide background information for school practitioners. By identifying and prioritizing the factors that meet the specific needs of students and schools, practitioners can better tailor program referrals and target specific programs for partnerships.

Outcomes

School practitioners will be able to work collaboratively with college outreach practitioners to establish effective support programs.
