Modeling Expectations

Relationship to framework

The kinds of interactions adults have with students set the stage for students’ aspirations toward college and their beliefs about being “college worthy.” Students need adults who hold high expectations for them and provide supportive settings to increase the likelihood that they will be successful in postsecondary institutions.

Purpose

To provide practitioners with a context for discussing how students interact with adults around the issues of college preparation and access.

Outcomes

Practitioners will identify strategies they can use to express high expectations for students.

How to use

This tool may be used to facilitate staff discussions.

When to use

During staff professional development opportunities

Directions:

  • The statements in the chart were written from a student perspective in terms of the bargains they make with adults.
  • Read through the statements and then answer the following questions individually or with a partner.
  • Do you agree that students see the classroom in this manner? Why or why not?
  • What difference do you think it would make if all adults in a student’s life - teachers, administrators, counselors, and outreach staff - met the conditions of the bargain?
  • What do you personally need to strengthen in order to address student actions?

If you will:

Then we will:

Show you know and care about the material

Believe the material can be important for us to learn

Treat us as smart and capable of challenging work

Feel respected and rise to the challenge of demanding work

Allow us increasing independence but agree with us on clear expectations

Learn to act responsibly on our own, though we will sometimes make mistakes in the process

Model how to act when you or we make mistakes

Learn to take intellectual risks; learn to make amends when we behave badly

Show respect for our differences and individual styles

Let you limit some of our freedoms in the interest of the group

Keep private anything personal we tell you

Trust you with information that could help you teach us better
