Building Higher Education Relationships

Relationship to framework

The relationships between schools, school systems, and higher education are critical to the success of students. It is important to find ways to mutually bridge the P-12 and postsecondary gaps in communication and expectations.

Purpose

To provide information and direction for the development of higher education relationships.

Outcomes

Schools will be able to:

  • Identify what currently exists.
  • Determine action steps to be taken to build higher education relationships.

This tool can be used as general information or as part of the planning process.

Select institutions of higher education
based on criteria that best fit your student population.

Identify institutions that are located within the same geographic region.

 

 

Identify institutions where most of your students attend after graduating high school.

 

 

Use student surveys to collect information about student interests in postsecondary education, including career aspirations, environmental considerations, and educational interests.

 

 

Create relationships between your school or organization and the postsecondary institutions identified above to ensure alignment of admission requirements and school curriculum and activities.

 

 

Assemble a college access preparedness team, including (but not limited to) the following. These people should be available to meet with college officials for the purpose of establishing the relationship.

College and career counseling staff

 

 

Teachers

 

 

Students

 

 

Parents or other family members

 

 

Community leaders and volunteers

 

 

Contact the appropriate college officials to initiate the relationship. Key partners are listed below.

General Partnership. College presidents, Dean of Academic Affairs, Dean of Admission/Financial Aid, outreach program directors

 

 

Admission Requirements. Dean of Admission, admission staff, outreach program director and staff

 

 

Financial Aid. Dean of Financial Aid, financial aid staff, Dean of Admission, admission staff

 

 

Contiguity and Student Support on Campus. Dean of Student Affairs (including residence life, student activities), Dean of Academic Affairs, faculty, retention specialists, undergraduate or graduate students from your school or program

 

 

Agree on and purse a strategy of regular events, activities, or other functions that convey information. Beginning in 9th grade (or earlier if applicable) and continuing through graduation, these activities should contain the following characteristics.

Focus on getting college application preparation (including academic goal-setting)

 

 

Focus on paying for college

 

 

Tracking system that includes goal-setting for students, assessment of progress toward goals and that (ideally) tracks student progress through postsecondary education
