Student-Level Planning: A Needs-Gap Analysis

Relationship to framework

Students need to be able to assess their own progress toward preparing for life beyond high school. This tool will help parents, school personnel, and outreach practitioners assist students in tracking their own coursework in relation to what is recommended for college preparation. Students who believe that they are on a college-preparatory path should take all of their courses at a college-preparatory or higher level. Setting high expectations means putting all students into higher-level courses and on track for postsecondary education.

Purpose

To help students plan for course selection over their high school career.

Outcomes

Students and parents will be able to:

  • Understand what courses are needed for postsecondary admittance.
  • Track courses.
  • Plan course selections that lead to postsecondary opportunities.

How to use

This is a prototype tool that should be used by school personnel or outreach practitioners in discussions with students and parents.

When to use

  • Before high school
  • During high school years for planning

Directions:

  • For each grade level, students should identify the course in which they are enrolled for each subject and the level at which they are taking it. For example, a 9th grader might identify their math course as Algebra and their level as I.
  • The “Other College Preparatory Activities” table is included for students’ reference and should be used as a guideline/timeline for postsecondary preparation.
