Prioritize and Plan
- Form a working group to address the efforts. Think about your support system and the stakeholder groups that need to be involved. Were they involved in the initial discussion? If not, how can you involved them?
- Think about how increasing postsecondary preparation aligns with other improvement goals or state/program requirements. The strategies and tools used in the toolbox are all part of the ongoing effort to improve schools. Increasing postsecondary preparation is best addressed as an embedded component of overall school or program change, not as a stand-alone goal.
- The Planning Pyramid may be helpful in developing a portfolio of initiatives to achieve your goals and objectives.
- Work with staff to plan changes in present programs. Tools that may be helpful are Where and When to Start and Developing a Challenging, Engaging Curriculum.
- Address budgetary, personnel, space, scheduling, staff development, and other key issues. The Financial Planning tool can be used to estimate financial needs.
- Develop a communication plan. How will the entire school community be informed of the effort to increase college readiness for all students? What will need to take place to create buy-in for all stakeholders? What issues or barriers will keep the school community from moving towards this goal?
