Search Tips:

Search Tip 1: Searching the Entire Site:
In the blue bar near the top of each page is a search box that provides a convenient way to search all the Pathways to College Network's Libraries and the entire Pathways' website at once using a word or word combination of your choice. Enter search words into the blue bar. Click on "Search Site" (results will include the first 5 or fewer items relevant to your search from each library and the general site listed in 4 sections). To see additional items, click on "View All Results" in any section for which 5 items are listed.
Search Tip 2: Using the Research Studies Library:
You can either “browse” or “search” the library. Browsing allows you to see all the items related to a topic, one or more key words, or a combination of both. Searching allows you to find a specific document. • Browse a topic by selecting “Show All Items in Topic” to generate a listing of all of the catalogued items for that topic, or by selecting a keyword or any combination of keywords and clicking on “Show Keyword Items.” More keyword selections yields more results (an “OR” search). • Perform a Keyword Search from the Keyword Search Page. On the Research Studies page, click on “Search by one or multiple keywords.” Select a keyword to find items associated with that keyword or select multiple keywords to find items associated with all keywords. Note: for this search, more keywords produce fewer results (an “AND” search). Click on the Search button. The results of a keyword search are listed as a bibliography in alphabetical order by author. If a single keyword search produces too many results, try adding a second or third keyword. • To print search results, click on the browser’s print icon, go to the print menu, or press CTRL/p. • To send search results to an email address, click on the check boxes of the desired records in your search results bibliography, enter an email address in the text box, and click on “Email Selected Records.” Note: you may send to multiple addresses by separating email addresses with a comma. • “Smart Search” is a search strategy that intelligently finds items associated with the words or phrases you enter in the Search box. “Description” finds words you enter in the Search box in the short paragraph describing each item in the library.
Search Tip 3: Using the College Access and Success State Data Library:
• On the Home page, click on a state to go directly to data for that state or use the "Find Selected State Data" tool to locate a state and a specific information category. • For each state, you may browse the information categories in the left navigation area and select resources from any category. • You may search the state sites by entering the desired text in the Search box at the top of the page and clicking "Search".
Search Tip 4: Using the College Planning Resources:
• Conduct a word search for materials in the Directory by entering text in the Search box pertaining to the document title, description, or organization that produced the material. • Keyword search: using the 6 sets of keywords, you may use as many keywords as you wish to define your search. We recommend selecting an audience, content keyword, and any other keywords that could help to define what you seek.

IHEP and Lumina Launch New Program to Award Associate's Degrees Retroactively

The Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) and Lumina Foundation for Education- working with both community colleges and four-year institutions in six states - will find formerly enrolled college students whose academic records qualify them to be awarded an associate's degree retroactively. The project, called "Project Win-Win," also hopes to identify former students who are "academically short" of an associate's degree by nine or fewer credits and re-enroll them to earn a degree.

New Publication from ACT Focuses on College and Career Readiness

Progress is being made in getting more high school graduates ready for college and career, meaning potentially greater access to postsecondary education as well as increased likelihood of success, according to ACT'sjust-released annual Condition of College & Career Readinessreport for 2010.

New Publication from SREB Helps States Strengthen Adult Learning

A new report from the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), “A Smart Move in Tough Times: How SREB States Can Strengthen Adult Learning and the Work Force,” argues that even a modest investment in adult learning programs can fill vital workforce needs and bolster state economies. After noting the benefits of adult learning, the report urges policymakers to make a “second investment” in adults without high school credentials.

New Publications from America's Promise

A new report reveals boosts in federal spending on children during 2009 and 2010 were largely due to the stimulus legislation known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Without that additional one-time spending, the share of spending on children's programs would have actually declined over the past five years. Children's Budget 2010 is the latest edition of the Children's Budget series by America's Promise Alliance policy affiliate, First Focus.

The second report,Youth Readiness for the Future: A Report on Findings from a Representative Gallup Student Poll Sample; describes how in 2009-2010, the Gallup Student Poll gave nearly 450,000 of America’s young people a voice to convey their daily experiences and aspirations for the future. The online measure tracks the hope, engagement, and wellbeing of students. To date, research has shown that hope, engagement, and wellbeing can be linked to attendance, grades, achievement scores, retention, and employment.

The Schott Foundation's 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males Reveals Alarming Data Across All States

Yes We Can: The 2010 Schott 50 State Report on Black Malesin Public Education reveals that the overall 2007-08 graduation rate for Black males was only 47 percent. Half of the states have graduation rates for Black male students below the national average.

Mobilize.org to Convene Three Democracy 2.0 Summits
This fall and next spring Mobilize.org will host three Democracy 2.0 Summits on education and college completion within the Millennial Generation. Through this Democracy 2.0 Summit Series, titled "Target: 2020 - My Education. Our Future," Mobilize.org will give Millennials the opportunity to identify the obstacles their generation face when completing postsecondary programs and to work collaboratively on solutions that will address them.

The College Board Releases Two Reports Regarding College Completion

The College Board Advocacy & Policy Center has developed the College Completion Agenda - incorporating a Progress Report that will be updated annually and a companion State Policy Guide that was co-created with the National Conference of State Legislatures. They combine comprehensive research from nationally recognized sources with examples of promising policies, all aligned around 10 key recommendations. The agenda's purpose is to provide reliable, measurable information that tracks our collective progress, as well as policymaking strategies each state can use to help reach our destination.

New Publication from ECS Reports on the Progress of Education Reform

This issue of The Progress of Education Reform summarizes recent research that may challenge conventional wisdom on how and where public resources for postsecondary education should be dedicated in an effort to increase college completion rates.

New Publication from Jobs for the Future on the Community College and Career Training Grant Program

In March, Congress authorized the Community College and Career Training Grant Program in the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act. Institutions can apply for grants for the purpose of “developing, offering, and improving educational or career training” for workers eligible for training under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act. JFF recommends how this grant program can encourage community colleges to help more dislocated and unemployed workers move quickly through effective programs that result in successful employment and educational outcomes.

SHEEO Looks at the Characteristics and Uses of State Level Student Unit Record Systems at the Postsecondary Level

This report addresses the question: What are the characteristics and uses of state level student unit record systems at the postsecondary level across the country? It provides descriptions of 59 state-level postsecondary data systems located in 44 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

New Report from The Education Trust Indicates That Some Colleges and Universities Do Better Than Others in Graduating African-American Students
College completion gaps among individual institutions lurk under national averages, according to two new Education Trust reports that probe disaggregated six-year graduation rates at hundreds of the nation’s public and private institutions. Ed Trust’s analysis finds yawning gaps between white students and students of color at many colleges and universities.

Association of American Colleges and Universities Announces New Initiative to Increase Success of Community College Students
TheAssociation of American Colleges and Universitiesannounced the names of twelve community colleges chosen to take the lead in a new initiative funded by MetLife Foundation as part of its commitment to increasing the success of community college students. Part of its Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP) initiative, AAC&U’s new “Roadmap Project” will assist community colleges in creating robust and proactive programs of academic support—tied to expected learning outcomes
